The Difference Between R-4, L-4, and L-5 Skid Steer Tires

Examining R-4, L-4, or L-5 Skid Steer Tires

One of the defining characteristics of skid steers—and reasons for their popularity—is their versatility; they are capable of handling a wide variety of jobs and terrains, ranging from light-duty landscaping to demanding demolition work. As the applications in which skid steers are used has expanded, so has the number of tire choices available to today’s skid steer owners. While severe duty solids (SDS) tires are growing in popularity for the harshest jobs, many skid steers will be best served by an R-4, L-4, or L-5 tire. Keep reading to learn the difference between these tires and discover what the right tire choice is for your application.

Coleman Appreciates Primex—As a Logger and a Skidder Dealer

What Loggers and Skidder Dealers Look for in a Tire

In his years running logging crews and his family’s TigerCat dealership, Allen Coleman has come to appreciate the difference the right set of tires can make to the productivity and efficiency of a logging operation and to the performance of machines such as skidders, harvesters, and forwarders.

Coleman is seemingly involved with everything logging—from his family’s 40-plus years owning and operating Plains Logging Company in White Plains, Georgia, to the diversification of the family business in 2011 with the purchase of an equipment company now known as AllWood Equipment in Washington, Georgia. Given Coleman’s extensive experience, when he talks about logging tires, we listen.

Flotation Tires Drive Productivity in the Forest

Flotation Tires: From Farm to Forest

Though the cutting and harvesting of timber is the primary concern of logging operations, the protection of the forest floor from heavy equipment is also a priority for forward-thinking operations. Increasingly large and powerful logging machinery could cause damage to the ground and rip up the root map, slowing the time it takes for the forest to regenerate, reducing the rate of biomass production (resulting in less income), and making landowners unhappy. Fortunately for loggers—and forests—the use of flotation forestry tires is a simple way to minimize compaction and rutting.

Primex Handles the Pressure of Today’s Logging Equipment

Maximizing Performance with Proper Tire Pressure

Compare a logging operation of today with those of the not-so-distant past and one thing is obvious—the machines on site have grown considerably in both size and power. While the need to increase operational productivity and efficiency is driving the adoption of larger, more powerful equipment, it is also presenting new challenges. Luckily, there’s a simple step operators can take to overcome these challenges and make the most of their tires (and, subsequently, their machines): check tire air pressure frequently.
