Whether you're a tree-hugger, hiker, forester, logger, or just a regular person, trees play an important role in the lives of everyone. Whether they are offering shade from the sun, filling our lungs with clean air to breathe, providing building materials for our homes, or delivering us delicious and healthy fruit to eat, trees are subtly involved in people's daily lives. Occurring annually on the final Friday of April, Arbor Day presents an opportunity to recognize the vital role that trees play in our daily lives while also giving an opportunity to foster the impact they have by planting a new tree. Alliance & Primex Forestry Tires in Virginia 

The East Coast Sawmill and Logging Equipment Expo in Richmond, Virginia, celebrates its 35th year of operation this year! Taking place on May 13th and 14th, this is one of the largest and best-attended events in the forest products industry. Also known as Expo Richmond, this event gives attendees the chance to watch demonstrations, see the equipment, meet suppliers and learn about service providers in the numerous forestry-related professions such as sawmilling, kiln drying, harvesting, biomass, trucking, pallet manufacturing and recycling, material handling and firewood production.

Clearcutting and Long-Term Forest Health

The practice of clearcutting in forest maintenance is a frequent subject of controversy among professional foresters, loggers, and the general public. People don’t like clear cuts, most markedly because of the appearance of forests after the process has been completed. Foresters remain committed to advocating for the benefits of clear cutting to the long-term health of forests. So the challenge becomes how can we balance the long-term health of forests with maintaining their full, natural appearance.

The Problem with Still-Standing but Dead Trees

While The Walking Dead terrifies millions of people every Sunday night, it’s the “standing dead” populating our woods that keeps fearful foresters up at night. In the Pacific Northwest and Rockies alike, zombie trees—those still standing but dead from fire, disease, insects, or lack of water—are mingling amid their living brethren waiting for the right time to wreak havoc. In fact, according to a recent analysis commissioned by the Oregon Forest Resources Institute, there are already more than 350 million standing dead zombie trees populating the 14 million acres of national forestland in Oregon.
