On March 21 this year, countries around the globe will celebrate International Day of Forests. Entering its fourth year, the purpose of International Day of Forests is to celebrate and raise awareness for the importance of our forests, and the theme of this year’s event is The Forest: Nature’s Powerhouse. The power of the woods is something we're acutely aware of; as wood-based fuels continue to become more efficient and powerful, they are increasingly seen as one of the next important sustainable energy sources.

The search for renewable, green resources has led to a resurgence of interest in wood. Whether for use as a building material for the increasingly popular wood-based tall buildings or as an energy source for wood pellets, the wood market continues to expand. While wood is renewable, the method used by loggers to harvest lumber can have a dramatic impact on the health of the forest and its ability to regenerate. Although "clear cutting" is still the most common logging method, "selective logging" has gained popularity in recent years as it lacks some of the negative aspects associated with other logging methods.

As the summer progresses and the dry season comes upon us, the likelihood of forest fires significantly increases. While wildfires have always been an issue during the dry season, the combination of climate change, drought, and insects has not only increased the occurrence of forest fires and extended their season, but also has grown the size, damage inflicted, and cost of fighting them. Whether it’s lower snowpacks, drier springs, longer summers, or disease and damage, the forest’s trees are dying, and those dead trees present the perfect tinder for forest fires.

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) recently made news with its ambitious plans to reduce Canada’s carbon emissions by 30 megatons (MT) by the year 2030 in its “30 by 30 Climate Change Challenge” campaign. Experts may quibble with the association’s ability to account for these numbers because, unlike other manufactured goods, forest products are capable of removing and storing carbon from the atmosphere. Regardless of any controversy in this respect, we honor the efforts of any industry player that is taking steps to increase the sustainability of its resources and reduce its impact on global climate change.
