Why the WYO Rodeo is a Must-Attend Event

In 1931, the small town of Sheridan, Wyoming, was so quiet that according to local historians you could “shoot a shotgun down Main Street and have no fear of injuring anyone.” With the hopes of livening up the town, a group of citizens organized a rodeo to compete with the well-established professional rodeos, occurring in bigger, more bustling locations. It’s hard to believe that this July 11-17, the Sheridan WYO Rodeo will kick off for the 86th time - and Alliance Tire Group will be there to join the fun!

With its rich history and a week of events catering to everyone in the family, the Sheridan WYO Rodeo is a must-attend summer happening. Here’s a quick look at some of the events that make it great:

• Every event has a kick-off party, but the Sheridan WYO Rodeo Boot Kick-Off Party features an actual kicking! That is a boot-kicking competition for children nine and older. Don’t worry, the little ones won't be left out—there’s also a stick horse race for children under eight.

• More of a runner than a rustler? No worries, the Sneakers and Spurs Rodeo 5K Run and 1.5 Mile Walk offers a chance to show the cowboys that you don’t need four legs to be fast.

• The Sheridan WYO Rodeo parade has been lauded as the “most marvelous hometown parade ever.” This year’s parade theme is Hitch Your Wagon to the WYO. Insider tip: hit the pre-parade pancake breakfast on Grinnell Plaza to fuel up for the day.

• The hugely popular World Championship Indian Relay Races honor the important role that both Native Americans and horses played in the history of the Great Plains. Dating back over 400 years, Indian Relays are America’s oldest sport. Today, teams consisting of one rider, three horses, two holders, and a mugger compete for $50,000 in cash and prizes.

• The Native American Pow Wow and Dance is an event you don’t want to miss! A truly unique experience, participants come from numerous Native American nations across the country to take part in this one-of-a-kind event.  

• If the family still has energy after all these great events, check out the carnival. After all, nothing says "summer nights" more than a spin on the carousel, a ride on the Ferris wheel, or winning your date a stuffed animal at the bottle toss.

• With so many other great activities we almost forgot to mention the event's namesake. The Sheridan WYO Rodeo is now one of the elite rodeos on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WRCA) circuits. There will be plenty of rodeo action to be seen July 13-16.
