A Free Way to Grow Profits on the Farm

Improve Farm Profits for Free

Did you know there’s an easy and free way to save fuel, increase flotation, improve traction, and reduce soil compaction? It’s true! And all you need to do to reap these benefits is simply check the inflation pressure of your farm equipment’s tires on a regular basis to ensure they’re operating at the manufacturers’ recommended guidelines. That's all it takes!

Digging Deep into Your Soil’s Health with a Penetrometer

Using a Penetrometer for Improved Soil Health

Soil compaction is on a lot of farmers' minds with all the wet weather this spring. When soil compacts, soil particles are pressed together and pore space between them is reduced. This has been shown to decrease emergence and growth and limit nutrient uptake in crops, which all add up to reduced yields. In fact, Iowa State University Extension reports that soil compaction can result in a 10% to 20% loss in yields and minimized profits. One way to fight back against compaction is to learn the state of your fields with the use of a penetrometer, then take steps to reduce the impact of your equipment on sensitive soil with IF/VF tires.

Minimizing Soil Compaction at Planting

Controlling Soil Compaction During Planting

Planting time can be a difficult period on the farm—the weather rarely cooperates, which can keep farmers from entering their fields, and delayed planting eventually starts costing yields. Although it’s easy to feel a sense of urgency at this time of year, farmers should proceed with caution. Fields are particularly prone to soil compaction in the spring, and damage done during planting can not only negatively impact this year’s yields but future crops as well. Keep reading for a few tips to minimize soil compaction at planting.

Tire Tales: Too Much Tractor Tire

Why the Biggest Tire Isn't Always the Best Tire

The trend for agricultural machinery to become increasingly large and powerful might lead farmers to believe that bigger is always better. Though larger machines frequently lead to increases in overall productivity, having the biggest tires may, in fact, reduce the efficiency of your farm equipment. Recently, I helped a customer dispel the mistaken belief that “bigger is better” by outfitting their tractor with the tire size they needed to optimize performance and avoid the other pitfalls that could arise out of “over-tiring” your equipment.
