Tires to Cut Construction Costs

The good news is that construction is in a rebound after declines due to the recession. But, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the industry is experiencing some growing pains - filling job vacancies caused by factors such as workers leaving during the recession, an aging workforce, and no established pipeline of skilled workers.

New Smart Vest promises increased safety for construction workers. Designed to help prevent cars from crashing into work zones, the Smart Vest is the brainchild of researchers at Virginia Tech University. The Smart Vest is equipped with sensors that send a signal to the entertainment systems of approaching cars, warning drivers of an oncoming construction zone. The vest can also be programmed to warn the worker of approaching traffic. Accidents in roadside construction zones has been a real problem in United States; between 2003 and 2010, 962 workers were killed at roadside construction sites.
