Today is Earth Day! The largest secular observance in the world, more than 2 billion people a year celebrate Earth Day. This year’s observance is focusing on Trees for the Earth, and as manufacturers of Alliance and Primex forestry tires, we are deeply committed to developing tire technology to preserve the healthy growth, development, and sustainable use of our planet's fragile forests.
Earth Day was born in the late1960s, harnessing the energy of the anti-war movement and the emerging environmental consciousness of the nation. Its founders sought to unify the country for the protection of the planet’s natural resources. With the backing of two U.S. Senators, a Harvard graduate student gathered a national staff of 85 people and 20 million American volunteers to take to the country's parks and streets and advocate for a healthy, sustainable environment.
Earth Day has come a long way over the past 46 years. What started as a small national movement has gone global, now unifying people from different countries, and cultures, languages, and religions in an effort to reduce our species' impact on the planet, and stress the importance of maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment. As part of this year's theme, Earth Day organizers have set a goal to plant 7.8 billion trees, a tree for every person on the planet, by the event’s 50th anniversary in 2020.
Planting trees isn’t the only directive from this year's Earth Day. Its organizers are also calling for less reliance on fossil fuels and a movement to more sustainable sources of energy. Alliance and Primex forestry tires help to improve traction and reduce slippage, increasing machinery productivity and efficiency while also improving fuel economy, both helping conserve fossil fuels while also lessening the cost of operation. Our tires are also built specifically to reduce soil compaction of fragile forest floors.
The forest plays an important role in the stewardship of a healthy planet. Forests and trees help clean the air, filter our water, and provide a habitat for the planet's wildlife. If the emerging wood pellet market is any indication, trees also will play a large role in the quest to find alternatives to fossil fuels. We're committed to the protection of the world’s forests, and to sustainable timber harvesting practices. Alliance and Primex don’t want to just be the best forestry tires in the field today—we aspire to be the best tires in the forest for a long time to come.
